TrainedbyJP Nutrition Halcyon:

Adaptogenic combination supplement to aid post-workout recovery combining neuroprotective, osmotic and anxiolytic ingredients (30 servings / 120 caps)

Per Serving (4 Capsules):

  • 2000mg Taurine
  • 600mg KSM-66 Ashwagandha
  • 500mg Magnesium Bisglycinate
  • 332mg Magnesium Oxide
  • 200mg L-Theanine

About:

Taurine, is one of the most abundant amino acids demonstrating multiple cellular functions including a central role as a neurotransmitter, maintaining the structural integrity of membranes and in regulating calcium transport, and as an osmolyte and neuroprotectant. Muscles expel taurine during contraction, causing a 32% greater increase in plasma taurine levels in hydrated conditions whereby taurine is released due to an osmoregulatory process and taken up by other cells for osmotic regulation. 2000mg has been included in Halcyon for this exact reason; aiding in post workout cellular hydration and having a calming effect on the CNS.

Ashwagandha is a member of the family of herbs referred to as “adaptogens”. The term “adaptogen” is applied to a herb with phytonutrients that regulate metabolism when a body is perturbed by physical or mental stress. Adaptogens are used commonly for stress relief, brain health, adrenal health and for aiding hypothalamic pituitary adrenal-axis dysfunction. They help the body adapt by normalizing system functions to develop resistance to future stress and elevate the body’s functioning to a higher level of performance. More recently, adaptogens have started to be used in sports supplements that aim to enhance physical fitness. The adaptogenic properties of Ashwagandha raise the possibility of it being an effective ergogenic aid because the strain from exercise can be viewed as a form of stress. A double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel group study using 300mg KSM-66® patented Ashwagandha daily showed a potential increase in muscle growth as a function of an increase in testosterone and a decrease in the levels of cortisol, a catabolic agent through Ashwagandha adaptogenic properties. Ashwagandha has potentials for increasing energy production by aiding mitochondrial functioning and may increase creatine levels which can in turn lead to ATP generation. Finally, the effects of ashwagandha on the nervous system were shown as anti-anxiety agent to promoting focus and concentration may translate to better coordination and recruitment of muscles. 600mg KSM-66® has been included in Halcyon to bring about a positive energy.

Magnesium found as Mg 2+ is the second most abundant intracellular ion, after potassium, and is the fourth most abundant cation in the human body. This essential mineral is needed for a broad variety of physiological and biochemical functions; and is the co-factor in more than 300 enzymatic reactions including a key part of the enzyme Catechol-O-Methyltransferase (COMT) which aids in neurotransmitter metabolism and clearance. Mg 2+ is involved in many biochemical pathways of key importance, including the degradation of macronutrients, oxidative phosphorylation, DNA and protein synthesis, neuro-muscular excitability. As a physiological calcium channel antagonist, Mg 2+ affects processes that are regulated by intracellular calcium concentration fluxes and is therefore essential for normal neurological and muscular function. Epidemiologic, observational, and clinical trial data show that a diet high in magnesium (at least 500–1000 mg/day) may lower BP. One of the mechanisms by which magnesium lowers BP is by acting like a natural calcium channel blocker and competes with sodium for binding sites on vascular smooth muscle cells and may improve endothelial dysfunction.

L-theanine (γ-glutamylethylamide) is an amino acid primarily found in the green tea plant. As it is chemically similar to glutamate in structure, it has been shown to bind to glutamate receptors preventing glutamate reuptake and increasing GABA, dopamine and glycine concentrations. Research to date suggests a potential anti-stress effect (anxiolytic) of a single dose of 200mg L-theanine in humans which works to reduce anxiety; and has positive effects on both the mental and
physical symptoms of stress, including lowering heart rate and blood pressure.

The meaning of Halycon denotes a period of time in the past that was happy, calm, tranquil and peaceful; far removed from the onslaught of a high intensity training session. Make TrainedbyJP Nutrition Halcyon your weapon of choice when it comes to your attack on post workout recovery.
